This course is the entry level course for any guide wanting to enter the fulfilling career of the Field Guide.

This course is FGASA endorsed and CATHSSETA accredited.

The duration of this course is 70 days and these days are spent attending theory lectures and getting as much practical exposure as possible.

Weekly assessments are conducted every Sunday.

These will take the form of theory examinations as well as practical observations.

The subjects covered during this course are the following:

  • Introduction to Guiding

  • Creating a Guided Experience

  • Astronomy and Geology

  • Ecology and Climatology

  • Biomes and Taxonomy

  • Trees and Grasses

  • Arthropods and Fish

  • Reptiles and Amphibians

  • Birds and Mammals

  • Animal Behaviour

  • Human History and Conservation management

  • Practical skills necessary to conduct a guided experience.

  • Track and Sign

  • Snake Handling

  • And a Wilderness Trail
